A Message from The Bookworm Bus

Bus, Books, and Ice Cream making a WORDLY difference one child, one community at a time. The Bookworm Bus was born from a conversation in 2017 advocating 1 child not learning how to read is ONE child too many. 1 in 4 children grows up in the US not learning how to read. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development found that 50 percent of U.S. adults cannot read a book written at an eighth-grade level (April 2016). Illiteracy is a large-scale problem that impacts everyone. To read is to achieve and everyone should be awarded the opportunity to access books and library resources to achieve their greatest potential.

A Bus, Books and Ice Cream are eliminating the barriers created by poverty, limited opportunities, limited English, and a lack of transportation by taking library programs, resources, and services directly into neighborhoods and schools. Mary Lemist Titcomb who is credited with the first bookmobile at the turn of 20th century, achieved large-scale progress by taking the book to the man, not waiting on the man to come to the book. This is the same principle The Bookworm Bus is founded and operates. By taking these programs and resources directly into the communities, we are breaking down the barriers
of “What If” and building meaningful relationships.

The Bookworm Bus is a state-of-the-art mobile library with an activities center visiting communities throughout Waller and surrounding counties. Committed to delivering books, fun and fellowship, our routes travel the rural farm roads of Brookshire, Pattison, and Hempstead, Texas and beyond. We continue to develop reading programs, storytime and reading scavenger hunts and creative activities for all reading levels. The bus is a beacon of hope in building tomorrow’s readers.

Our mission – Where knowledge makes the journey delivering God’s compassionate grace through books
